Is Headway Worth Considering for Private Practice?

Based on my experience, yes. I would use Headway again.

Headway can be especially useful for independently licensed mental health providers who want to accept insurance without personally managing every part of insurance credentialing, eligibility verification, claims submission, and reimbursement.

You do not have to be building a large full-time practice for Headway to be useful.

It can make sense if you want a few clients outside of another job, are gradually building a solo practice, are leaving an agency or hospital position, already have an established practice, or simply want a more manageable way to add insurance-based clients.

Headway Handles Some of the Hardest Parts of Taking Insurance

One of the biggest barriers to starting an insurance-based private practice is not necessarily providing therapy. It is everything surrounding the therapy: credentialing, payer relationships, benefit verification, claims, billing, payments, documentation requirements, scheduling, and administrative systems.

Headway brings many of those functions together in one platform.

Different providers will value different parts of Headway. These are the areas that have mattered most in my own experience.

Headway Has Been a Bridge Into Private Practice for Me

I am Samuel Long, LISW-S, owner of Long Therapy Services, a private telehealth practice based in Ohio. I joined Headway about a year ago and began seeing clients through the platform relatively early in the process.

I originally chose Headway because I wanted a practical way to build a private practice without having to independently create every insurance and billing system from the beginning. Headway also had a strong EHR platform and, when I compared options, generally stronger reviews than several alternatives I was considering.

For me, the biggest value has been how much easier Headway made the transition from having an idea for a private practice to actually seeing clients in one.

I have been able to build Long Therapy Services while continuing my regular employment. Headway has handled much of the insurance credentialing and billing infrastructure that could otherwise take considerably more time to establish independently.

That does not mean every part of my practice exists inside Headway. Over time, I have continued developing parts of Long Therapy Services independently. But Headway gave me a practical bridge that allowed me to start seeing clients while those other pieces developed.

What the Headway Credentialing Process Is Like

Credentialing is one of the biggest reasons many providers consider a platform like Headway.

In my experience, the process has gone well. Some parts can move more slowly at the beginning, especially if you are starting without all of your credentialing information already organized.

Insurance billing can become a substantial administrative burden in private practice. Headway handles the insurance claim after the provider confirms the session and supplies the required billing information.

I have had a very good experience with this part of the platform. My payments have been reliable, and I like being able to see upcoming payments within the system.

Headway currently pays providers twice each month. That predictability makes it easier to understand practice revenue and cash flow instead of waiting for individual insurance claims to work their way through different payment schedules.

In my own practice, I have also generally found reimbursement through Headway to compare favorably with many of the alternatives I have looked at. Rates vary substantially by provider, license, insurer, and location, so another clinician's experience may be different.

Can Headway Actually Send You Clients?

It can. I have received many clients directly through Headway.

Headway allows prospective clients to search for providers based on factors such as location, availability, insurance, and the concerns they want help with. Providers maintain a public Headway profile that can appear in those searches.

That does not mean every inquiry or intake becomes a long-term client. Therapy requires a good clinical and interpersonal fit. Sometimes a person meets with you and decides someone else would be a better fit, or you determine that another clinician or type of care would better meet their needs.

No referral platform can guarantee a full caseload, but Headway has been a meaningful referral source for my practice.

One of the things I appreciate about Headway is that it can work with very different private-practice goals.

What I Would Still Like to See Headway Improve

I have had a very positive experience with Headway, but that does not mean every part of the platform is perfect.

None of those issues would prevent me from recommending Headway. They are simply areas where I think the platform could continue improving.

Headway Makes Private Practice Easier. It Does Not Replace Running Your Practice.

This distinction is important.

Headway can provide credentialing, billing infrastructure, practice-management tools, documentation support, referrals, and other resources. You are still the licensed professional responsible for your clinical work and your own business and professional obligations.

• Maintain appropriate professional licensure and comply with the rules of the states where you practice.
• Maintain appropriate privacy, confidentiality, HIPAA, documentation, and professional-practice procedures.
• Understand the insurance and provider agreements that apply to your work.
• Keep appropriate financial and business records for your practice.
• Consider separating personal and business finances and obtaining professional legal, accounting, or tax guidance when appropriate.
• Build the parts of your professional identity and practice that you want to own independently over time.
