Investing in therapy

Therapy is not just another appointment

For many men, therapy is about getting help with the pressure they have been carrying quietly for a long time. It can be a place to look honestly at what is happening, what is not working, and what needs to change.

Less guessing

You can slow things down enough to understand the pattern instead of reacting, avoiding, or pushing through automatically.

More direction

Therapy can help you sort through stress, burnout, fatherhood, career pressure, identity changes, and major decisions.

Better use of your time

The work is focused on real life, including how you think, communicate, recover, set limits, and make choices outside of session.

Private pay and self-pay

Private pay keeps the process simpler

Private pay means you pay directly for therapy rather than using insurance. Many clients choose this option because it keeps the process clear, reduces insurance involvement, and allows therapy to focus on what matters most to them.

More privacy

No insurance claim is submitted unless you request a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

More flexibility

Private pay can allow more flexibility with session focus, treatment goals, and pace of care compared with insurance requirements.

Less paperwork

Payment is handled directly, without waiting on insurance authorization, claims processing, or network restrictions.

Important note: Therapy records are still clinical records. If you request a superbill or use insurance reimbursement, a diagnosis code is typically required by insurance companies.

Insurance through Headway

Insurance plans currently accepted

I accept several insurance plans through Headway. Coverage depends on your specific plan, benefits, deductible, location, and Headway eligibility.

Aetna Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Carelon Behavioral Health Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey Independence Blue Cross Pennsylvania Virtual National Network Quest Behavioral Health

Before starting: Your exact cost depends on your plan. Headway can help verify eligibility, deductible status, copay, coinsurance, and other plan details.

Out-of-network benefits

Check out-of-network benefits with Thrizer

Thrizer can help you check whether your insurance plan may include out-of-network benefits for therapy. This can be helpful if you want to pay privately for sessions but still explore whether your insurance company may reimburse part of the cost.

The benefit check can give you a clearer picture of your deductible, possible reimbursement, and estimated out-of-pocket cost before you decide how you want to pay for therapy. You can also read more about Thrizer if you want to understand the service before checking benefits.

1. Check your benefits

Use the Thrizer tool to see whether your insurance plan may offer out-of-network coverage for therapy.

2. Review the estimate

Thrizer may show information about deductible status, possible reimbursement, and estimated costs based on your plan.

3. Decide what fits

You can use that information to decide whether private pay, Thrizer, superbills, or insurance through Headway makes the most sense.

Important note: Thrizer does not guarantee reimbursement. Out-of-network benefits, deductible status, claim approval, and reimbursement amounts depend on your specific insurance plan.

Superbills

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance company if you pay privately and want to request possible out-of-network reimbursement.

What it includes

Your identifying information, provider information, date of service, type of service, CPT code, diagnosis code, and amount paid.

How it works

You pay for therapy directly, receive the superbill, and submit it to your insurance company according to your plan’s process.

What to expect

Reimbursement is not guaranteed. It depends on your plan, deductible, out-of-network benefits, and claim requirements.

Questions to ask your insurance company

  1. Do I have out-of-network mental health coverage?
  2. What percentage does my plan reimburse for individual therapy?
  3. What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
  4. Do I need to submit a claim form with the superbill?
  5. Where do I send the superbill and claim form?

A simple guide to help you decide

There is not one right payment option for everyone. The best choice depends on your priorities, insurance plan, budget, and how much insurance involvement you want.

Choose private pay if

  • You want a simpler payment process.
  • You want less insurance involvement.
  • You prefer more flexibility in the focus of therapy.
  • You value privacy and direct control over care.

Choose private pay plus superbill if

  • You want to pay privately but request reimbursement.
  • You have PPO or out-of-network benefits.
  • You are comfortable submitting claims to your plan.
  • You want more therapist choice without network limits.

Choose insurance if

  • You want to use an in-network insurance option.
  • Your plan is accepted through Headway.
  • You prefer direct billing through insurance.
  • You want to reduce out-of-pocket cost when possible.
